Tutorial: How to Turn Jeans into a Skirt

After doing a round of spring cleaning, you're bound to create a pile of old jeans you just can't wear anymore. You may be tempted to throw them away, but wait...you can make cute skirts out of them to wear all summer long! This supersimple technique will save you money and keep you looking cool.

Start by cutting the bottom off your jeans legs to the length you want your skirt to be.

Then, cut the inseam of your jeans like so:

Continue the cut made at the inseams up the center front and center back seams of the skirt as well.

Then, lay one side of the cut material over the other and pin like so:

Do the same in the back.

Then, run two lines of stitching over the material to secure the pinned fabric both in the front and in the back.

Once your fabric is sewn down, you can turn the skirt inside out and trim away the excess fabric with pinking shears to prevent fraying.

You can then hem the bottom or let it fray a bit, it's up to you.

You are now the proud owner of a new skirt!

One quick comment!

I literally have like, 15 pair of these, and if your sewing machine balks at sewing over the thick seams from just cutting the seams... you can take a little more time (and if you have the patience, because it can take a lot of time) and use a seam ripper to take the seams out all the way to lay the inseams flat.

Oh, to own a new sewing machine. That would be awesome. But I do love my grandmother's old singer, so I should not complain. :D

fab thanks for the tutorial! I have 3 pairs of jeans and I'm off to a hot humid japan next week so I'm excited to make this up today!!!!! Now the biggest problem is the hem line, above or below knee

Can anyone tell me how the size of the skirt compares to the size of the original jeans? I have a bunch of jeans that are too small :( and I'm wondering if the skirt might end up a little roomier.

I made a couple with too-tight pairs of jeans and, in general, found the skirts to be about as tight as or tighter than the original jeans. sorry...

I have done something similar with jeans that are too small with good results. You just need to give them a more A-line shape by taking part of the discarded lower leg of the jeans and sew it in the triangle between the legs on the front and back. The one problem is that the skirt is going to fit higher up than the jeans did (at your waist instead of your hips, probably), so the pockets might end up looking a little strange. Fortunately, you can remove them with a seam ripper and decorate or dye over the place they used to be if they bother you.
